Hear a MIDI file without opening a DAW.
Choose a .mid or .midi file and press Play. The notes are read on your device and played with a simple synth tone, so you can check pitches, timing and stray notes before you import the file into a music program. Nothing is uploaded.
A Standard MIDI file

Check a MIDI file before you import it
This player reads the note events inside a Standard MIDI file and plays them with a triangle-wave synth. It does not use the instruments, effects or mix settings stored in a project file, so the sound here is deliberately plain: you are listening to pitches and timing, not to an arrangement.
- Open the file. Drop it on the box above or browse for it. Files are read by JavaScript in this tab; there is no upload endpoint.
- Press Play, or drag the position slider. The orange line follows the playback position across the piano roll. Press Pause to hold the position and Play again to continue from there.
- Read the roll. Vertical position is pitch, horizontal position is time, block width is note length. Two blocks on the same row at the same moment are the same pitch played twice.
- Then edit in your DAW. This page is a checker, not an editor. Merging split notes, moving onsets and choosing an instrument all happen in your music software.
Limits of a browser MIDI preview
| Item | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| Pitched notes | Played. All tracks are merged into one synth voice group. |
| Percussion channel | Skipped. Drum tracks have no pitch to show on the roll. |
| Program changes, controllers | Ignored. The synth tone is fixed. |
| Tempo changes | Read from the file, so timing follows its tempo map. |
| File size | Up to 5 MiB, 50,000 pitched notes and two hours of notes. Longer files should be split in your editor. |
| Audio rendering | None. To hear the real instruments you need a DAW, a sampler or a soundfont player. |
MIDI playback questions
Why does this MIDI sound like a beep?
MIDI stores note instructions, not recorded sound. This page supplies one simple synth so that the notes are audible immediately. Your DAW or a soundfont replaces that tone with a piano, guitar or any other instrument.
My file plays but I hear nothing. What should I check?
Check the volume slider on this page and the system volume. If the summary reports zero pitched notes, the file may contain only percussion or only controller data. A file that fails to open usually has an unusual or corrupted header; open and re-save it in your editor.
Can I use this to convert audio to MIDI?
Not on this page. The MP3 to MIDI converter creates a MIDI file from a recording, and it shows the same kind of playback preview next to the original audio so you can compare them.
Does opening a MIDI file here change it?
No. The file is read into memory and played. Nothing is written back, and the download button only exists on the converter page for files the converter produced.
